Is Claude HIPAA compliant?
Not by default. No Claude plan is HIPAA compliant out of the box — Free, Pro, Max, Team, Console, Workbench and Cowork are all outside Anthropic's BAA. Anthropic provides a very limited version of Claude through Anthropic's Enterprise offering with additional configuration, a HIPAA-enabled API agreement....or through Hathr.AI, which is intrinsically more secure and built for Healthcare and other regulated industries, and runs Claude inside AWS GovCloud with a signed BAA on every HIPAA-compliant plan.
How is Claude AI used in healthcare?
Claude AI isn't typically used in healthcare because it generally isn't compliant, or incurs large amounts of risk, and even then, Claude's traditional interface is not generally HIPAA compliant or ready for any regulated or proprietary information. Healthcare teams use Claude via Hathr.AI for clinical documentation and chart review, medical record review, coding and billing, appeal drafting, and utilization review — on real PHI, because the BAA and the AWS GovCloud FedRAMP High boundary are in place before the first upload. Does Anthropic sign a BAA for Claude?
Yes, for specific products: the HIPAA-ready Enterprise plan, enabled by the organization's Primary Owner, and eligible API organizations. Free, Pro, Max, Team, Console, Workbench and Cowork are not covered. Hathr.AI includes a signed BAA on every HIPAA-compliant plan, accepted electronically at signup, with no eligibility review.
Is there a HIPAA compliant Claude API?
Yes. The Hathr.AI API gives developers Claude access inside the same GovCloud, FedRAMP High boundary, with a BAA, documentation and support on HIPAA-compliant plans. Anthropic's own API can also be operated under a BAA within a HIPAA-enabled organization, but the encryption, key management, audit trails and logging hygiene around it become your engineering team's responsibility.
Is Claude AI private?
The consumer Claude app is not private in the sense healthcare and legal teams need — there is no BAA behind it. Hathr.AI is: zero data retention, no use of customer data for model training or product development, US-only processing, and full audit logging of prompts and outputs.
